COVID-19 Response

Picture
Antimicrobial germ shield six week results. During this period, 3 family used the box. From AZ to Ohio to Oregon and to Mexico. Every germ from every hotel lobby floor, luggage cart, room, etc. was put into the box, and without being cleaned other than with a wet washcloth the result is remarkably low. Any number 30 or below is considered by industry standards as food safe. Incredible performance from the single application, non-toxic antimicrobial germ shield.
Roof Box Guy is partnering with Master Germ and Odor Removal to professionally disinfect our roof boxes and apply the antimicrobial germ shield that kills pathogens on contact.
Master Germ and Odor Removal tests the boxes with an ATP Meter.
Master Germ and Odor Removal leads the Valley in disinfection, servicing Labxpress, AZ State Bar Association, etc. with disinfectants and antimicrobials that are non-toxic and food contact surface safe.

Antimicrobial Germ Shield Keeps Roof Boxes Safe!

Master Germ and Odor Removal applied their antimicrobial germ shield to our roof boxes to reduce germ transfer.
Because our boxes go EVERYWHERE, there is a huge opportunity to bring different germs and strains of viruses back from someone's journey. Luggage usually goes into the box, then back out onto a hotel luggage cart, to the floor of a hotel room, and then to the cart, the floor of the lobby, and back into the roof box, transferring microbes and pathogens with the luggage.
Check out the results from the antimicrobial germ shield after six weeks! They are stunning. During this period, 3 families used the box. From AZ to Ohio and back, to  Oregon and back, and to Mexico and back.
Any number below 30 on the ATP meter (the generally accepted tool for measuring germ levels) is considered by industry standards as food safe. Put another way, it is likely safer for you to make a sandwich on our roof box than in your own kitchen, which would probably test in the 600-850 range.
Incredible performance from the single application, non-toxic antimicrobial germ shield.
Rent Roof Box Guy roof boxes with confidence that we are absolutely doing our part to minimize germ transfer.

Detail Day

Detail Day at Roof Box Guy is a big day, and one of experimentation for the detailer.

I called Thule several times, and their only recommendation has been to store the boxes inside when not in use and to wash bugs off of them. I asked about a UV blocker to protect them since the unpainted boxes smell funny after a year or two if not coated with something to keep the ABS plastic boxes from breaking down.

A friend and neighbor is a detailer for big-name car brand dealerships, and this was all new ground to him, too. It seems no one has detailed ABS, which makes sense because the most common use of ABS plastic is as a sewer drain pipe, such as from your shower or bathtub to the city sewer system. Have you ever seen those black square tops in the wall behind the laundry machine, or in the front yard sticking up out of the ground? Those are clean-outs for your your drain system and they're made from ABS...and nobody details those.

I called several more detailers, and one guy had ideas for getting rubbed paint from a customer going into their garage off the box. He came out and detailed the boxes, and they looked fantastic for a few weeks until his water-based UV coating quit protecting.

I went to Detail Garage (a Chemical Guys detailing superstore), and their guy suggested using Tire Kicker Tire Shine (I love the label colors and design and execution. Check it out below in my slideshow), and the results are fantastic--deep black color restored and they look brand new again, and most importantly they don't stink like all sun-exposed abs smells, but it was a bit greasy and seemed to get loaded with bugs and dust quickly. I purchased and used the suggested Wonder Wave Durafoam applicator pad, then buffed it off with a microfiber cloth. The struggle was getting the Tire Kicker down in to the thousands of indentations in the textured surfaces of the Force boxes (seen above in the middle photo with a black roof box); think golf-ball that is 3' wide and 9' long. That is a lot of indentations! I applied it heavily.

The next time in the Detail Garage I asked about...

...a product that would get down in to the indentations better. Two products were suggested that are more sprayable. I tried Silk Shine dressing and Natural Shine dressing. These also worked very well, keeping the color looking good, and the Thule roof boxes went out looking fresh and new. I have gone through many bottles of both of these, but Silk Shine is my clear favorite because it sprays on, evens out quickly, and doesn't give a super-shiny gloss that looks fake. It does an awesome job of keeping the boxes looking brand new, protecting against road grit and damage from the sun's UV rays.

The only downside for me is needing to do it every time the boxes go out and come back. I use a lot of these products, and the store sells the products at full MSRP, so it gets expensive to treat the boxes every week. The store associate says I can reapply daily if I'd like--maybe he didn't understand my concern at the mounting costs of spraying a fleet of roof-mounted Tupperware on a weekly basis. A 16 oz bottle would do two boxes for a month if I was conservative and never used a clean applicator sponge. Of course, that sponge gets dirty dirty dirty. When a box comes back, I wipe it down with a clean, wet towels, scrub the front and underside a bit extra for the extra bug-bits, and then treat it with the UV protection dressing. When a customer is set to pick up a box, I give it another spray of protectant to make the box look awesome and ensure the box is protected from the elements on the road.

Any thoughts on a product to use that would last for 6+ months? It needs to protect against UV rays and road elements, especially on the front of the box where many a bug has crossed over the rainbow bridge.

On-going maintenance continues. Detail Day has gone the way of used equipment--most of my older boxes have been transitioned out of the rental fleet and replaced with brand new boxes, so the trick is to get them protected right away when we take them out of their box and bag that they ship in. I'm wide open to suggestions. I'm also wide open to product sponsors who want to test and have their products featured. People are impressed with our standard of maintenance, so I brag about Chemical Guys.
